Freon Fred’s Fall HVAC Checklist: 7 Things to Do Before Cooler Weather Arrives
Fall on the Gulf Coast is a little different.
While homeowners in other parts of the country are already pulling out jackets, families across Picayune, Slidell, Pearl River, Carriere, Bay St. Louis, and Diamondhead may still have their air conditioners running.
But cooler weather is coming eventually—and Freon Fred has a message for homeowners:
Don’t wait until the first cold night to find out your HVAC system has a problem!
September and early fall are a great time to give your system some attention after a long, hot summer. Here are seven things to put on your fall HVAC checklist.
1. Change That Dirty Air Filter
Freon Fred is starting with the easy one.
Your HVAC system has spent months pulling air through its filter. Dust, pet hair, pollen, and other particles can build up and restrict airflow.
A dirty filter can make your system work harder and may contribute to poor airflow and comfort problems.
Check your filter now and replace it when needed.
Fred’s Rule: If you can’t remember the last time you changed it, it’s probably time to take a look.
2. Give Your Outdoor Unit Some Breathing Room
Summer yard work can leave grass clippings, weeds, leaves, and other debris around your outdoor unit.
Keep the area surrounding your condenser clear so air can move freely around it.
And as leaves begin falling, continue checking the area throughout the season.
Good airflow matters whether your system is finishing another hot afternoon or preparing for the months ahead.
3. Pay Attention to Strange Noises
Your HVAC system shouldn’t suddenly sound like Freon Fred threw a wrench into it.
If you notice new:
- Buzzing
- Grinding
- Rattling
- Squealing
- Banging
- Clicking
don’t ignore it.
Sometimes a strange sound is the first warning that a component needs attention. Getting it checked early may help you avoid a bigger repair later.
4. Don’t Ignore Uneven Temperatures
Is the living room comfortable while the back bedroom feels like a sauna?
That’s worth investigating.
Uneven temperatures can have several possible causes, including airflow restrictions, ductwork issues, insulation problems, equipment performance, or system design.
Closing vents throughout the house usually isn’t the best solution.
If one part of your home consistently feels different from another, let a professional determine why.
5. Test Your Heat Before the First Cold Night
Here’s one of the most important items on Freon Fred’s fall checklist.
Turn your heat on before you actually need it.
You don’t have to turn the house into a sauna. The idea is simply to make sure the heating system starts and operates normally.
If it doesn’t work, you can schedule service now instead of joining the rush when the first cold front arrives.
If you smell a brief dusty or burning odor the first time the heat runs after sitting unused, accumulated dust may be burning off. But a strong, persistent, electrical, or unusual burning smell should be taken seriously—turn the system off and have it inspected.
6. Check Your Thermostat
Your thermostat is the command center for your comfort system.
Make sure it’s responding properly, replace batteries if your model uses them, and review your schedule if you have a programmable or smart thermostat.
Fall is also a good time to stop fighting over the thermostat and create a schedule that works for your household.
Freon Fred can’t help with the family thermostat argument, though. You’re on your own with that one.
7. Schedule Fall HVAC Maintenance
Your HVAC equipment just survived another Gulf Coast summer.
That’s a lot of operating hours.
Professional maintenance gives a technician an opportunity to inspect the system, evaluate its operation, identify developing problems, and prepare your equipment for the next season.
Preventive maintenance can also help you catch a small problem before it becomes an inconvenient breakdown.
Why Fall HVAC Maintenance Matters on the Gulf Coast
Our HVAC systems deal with conditions that can be tough on equipment.
We have long cooling seasons, high humidity, heavy rain, storms, and—in coastal areas—exposure to salty air.
That’s why HVAC maintenance shouldn’t end when summer does.
Taking care of your equipment throughout the year can help maintain comfort, efficiency, and reliability.
Freon Fred Says: Don’t Wait Until You’re Cold!
Picture it.
The first real cold front rolls through.
You walk over to the thermostat.
You switch from COOL to HEAT.
And…
nothing happens.
That’s exactly the kind of surprise we’d rather help you avoid.
Have your system checked before you depend on it.
