A mini split that is too small may run for hours without catching up on a July afternoon. One that is too large can cool the room quickly, shut off too soon, and leave the air sticky. The goal is not to buy the biggest system your budget allows. It is to choose a properly matched indoor and outdoor unit that provides steady comfort, controls humidity, and avoids unnecessary energy costs for years to come.

Start With Room Size, Not a Guess

Mini split capacity is measured in BTUs, or British thermal units. A higher BTU rating means the system can move more heat. For a single room, square footage gives you a useful starting point.

In many homes, a quick cooling estimate falls between 20 and 30 BTUs per square foot. For these projects, size the system for that particular room and its unique conditions. Do not choose capacity based on the total square footage of the house.
